Yahoo Fantasy Review

After years of being one of the top traditional fantasy spots out there, Yahoo has entered the DFS world with Yahoo Daily Fantasy Sports. Many people wondered if they were going to be able to compete with the big boys, and the early signs are positive. So, are they the DFS for you? Let’s take a look at what Yahoo Fantasy has to offer its customers.

Games Offered

If you are a fan of American sports, then you will probably like the sports that Yahoo Fantasy offers. Their most popular sports are NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL games, but they plan on offering plenty more soon. You can play plenty of games for each of those sports, so there is a huge selection of games to choose from. Below are just a few of the game and contest formats that you will find over at Yahoo Fantasy. Expect plenty more games to show up in the next year or so.

Head-to-Heads – If you simply want to pit your lineup against someone else’s, then this is the format for you. When playing head-to-head, all you are hoping for is that your team does better than your opponent’s team. If your lineup gets your more points, then you will double your money. This is a great format to use against friends or when you want to pit your lineup against a random opponent on the site, of which there are plenty.

Leagues – Leagues is an extremely popular format at Yahoo Fantasy because the prizes are much bigger than at most other DFS sites. When you play in a league, you will be trying to pick a lineup that is going to be able to beat everyone else’s. While it can be tough to place near the top, the payouts are often ridiculously big. For example, if you play in one of their $15K tournaments, you pay a $5 entry fee and can win a prize by placing in the top 900 spots, while the top prize is $2,000.

50/50’s – Most people will be very happy to see that Yahoo Fantasy decided to include this format since it is one of the most popular in the industry at the moment. When playing a 50/50 contest, you will pick your lineup as usual and will be hoping that it ranks in the top half of the standings after all games have been played. It can be stressful when you see that you are near the middle of the rankings, but it’s a great way to double up.

Guaranteed Contests – Anyone who has used a daily fantasy sports site will know how great it is to have the option of playing in guaranteed contests. Well, Yahoo Fantasy has a ton of them for each of the sports that they offer. These contests allow you to see exactly how much the big prizes will be, and the best thing about them is that they pay out that amount regardless of how many people sign up.

The Good

The fact that Yahoo is a huge, reputable company is a very big deal. They have to work hard to make sure that Yahoo Fantasy works well because they want customers to take advantage of everything else that they offer. Even though they are relatively new to the daily fantasy scene, you can be sure that they will be adding features regularly and they will quickly fix any issues that they run into.

Another reason why Yahoo Fantasy is shooting up the ranks for seasoned DFS players is its huge selection of high-paying contests. Since they are such a huge company, they were able to quickly offer big prize pools for just about every sport. Everyone should be happy with this feature since it means that plenty of people are going to be actively using the site.
People who have been playing traditional fantasy games at Yahoo over the years will be quite comfortable with the DFS interface. You can quickly set your lineups, check your stats, or even do some research from every page on the site. It might just be one of the best daily fantasy sports interfaces out there right now.

Because there is such a huge pool of players, you might like the fact that new, inexperienced players will be taking part in most contests. It means that regardless of your skill level, you will have a pretty good chance of winning some games even if you don’t have the best lineup-setting skills yet. Experienced players will especially like this because they don’t always have to go up against tough competition.

The Not So Good

Probably the biggest con for Yahoo Fantasy is the fact that they don’t offer a sign-up bonus to their new customers. This is something that just about every other daily fantasy sports site offers, so it could be something that keeps people from signing up altogether. Of course, it won’t be a big deal to people who wouldn’t be using the site regularly since it takes a while to reap the rewards from those bonuses. You also won’t find too many unique games at Yahoo Fantasy, which keeps them from standing out from the bunch. They do have the games that most DFS players would want to find, but it would have been great if they had come up with something that made it an easy decision to choose them over all of the others. As of right now, you’ll have to be happy with basic DFS games and contests.

Overall Opinion

While Yahoo Fantasy is one of the newest kids on the block, it is impressive how quickly they have been able to match or exceed what the most popular DFS sites offer. Once they add in a few more sports and a couple more formats, they could just be one of the best spots to go. Don’t be surprised if it only takes a year or two for them to be considered one of the top daily fantasy sports sites on the planet.
